All About Bento Boxes

Bento boxes are one of the oldest traditions in Japan! We serve bento at Shiro’s, and relish in the history, from portability to traditional contents, and how they’ve evolved over hundreds of years!

The origins of bento trace back to dried rice, known as Karei or Tonjiki*, considered the ancestor of onigiri (rice balls). These were made by drying rice to enjoy on the go, even centuries ago, and consumed during outdoor activities like hunting, fishing, and farming. Bento culture, which continues to thrive today, flourished during the Edo period (1603–1868) and the Meiji period (1868–1912).

One iconic form of bento, the “makunouchi bento,” became a popular treat for audiences attending Japanese traditional performing arts, such as Kabuki and Noh. This bento, traditionally enjoyed between acts, typically featured bale-shaped rice balls paired with a variety of side dishes, such as grilled fish, egg rolls, simmered vegetables, fried items, and pickled vegetables. Today, “makunouchi bento” is widely available at grocery stores, convenience stores, and bento shops across Japan.

Today in Japan, bento is often enjoyed while viewing cherry blossoms this time of year. The tradition of hanami (cherry blossom viewing), initially an activity for aristocrats, became a beloved pastime for the general public during the Edo period. This custom led to “hanami bento” – picnics under cherry blossoms accompanied by beautiful, seasonal meals. Popular dishes from that time included fish cakes and bright tamagoyaki (Japanese omelet), which remains a classic bento side dish today. Along with tamagoyaki, other current popular side dishes include fried chicken and mini tomatoes, bringing a vibrant burst of color to bento, and included in bento offered at Shiro’s.

Look for our Shiro’s Bento Box for takeout and delivery during lunch. With cherry blossoms blooming in many parts of Seattle and fresh spring weather upon us, why not celebrate the season with a Bento Box from Shiro’s while enjoying the beauty of the blossoms!
